Understanding Readability Formulas
Different readability formulas use different approaches to measure text complexity. Using multiple formulas gives you a more complete picture of your text's readability.
- Flesch-Kincaid & Flesch Reading Ease: Based on sentence length and syllables per word
- SMOG Index: Focuses on complex words (3+ syllables)
- Gunning Fog: Considers both sentence length and percentage of complex words
- Coleman-Liau: Uses character counts instead of syllables
- ARI: Calculates grade level based on characters and sentence structure
Best Practices: For general audiences, aim for a grade level of 8-10. Professional or academic audiences may require higher levels (12-16).
Note: Readability scores are estimates and should be used as guides, not absolute measures. Context, audience knowledge, and formatting also affect how easy text is to understand. This tool is provided as-is for educational purposes.
